Les Cayes like most Haitian cities, has no treatment site suitable for solid waste. But it concentrates almost 58% of the population of the Southern Department, distributed over 39% of the area and the majority of economic activities.

Large amounts of waste are produced, but improperly managed, crammed into dumps or discharged directly into watercourses. Every day, illegal dumping, established on land cracked, broken, or just permeable, encourages the direct access of leachate to groundwater, which is a real danger to public health, a threat to the quality of the environment due to the contamination of surface waters.

In order to provide the country of facilities able to play a key role in protecting the environment, the Ministry of the Environment (MDE) aims the implantation of Treatment centers for household and similar waste, environmentally compliant (Class II) through some secondary cities of Haiti including Les Cayes.

Officials of the City Council, Civil Society, the private business sector and employees of public administration, have warmly welcomed the idea of ​​this project, which aims to make Cayes a development model in the field of solid waste management. The Mayor has already approved the preliminary studies on two potential sites that could accommodate this project.

Work already done :

• Complete mapping of the town of Les Cayes ;

• Updating the plan of the city ;

• Socio-economic and urban mapping of the town ;

• Mapping of points of discharge or disposal of solid waste at the level of municipality (more than a hundred permanent points were listed).
