Haiti - Politic : President Martelly cheered at Howard University

As part of his official visit to the United States on the eve of his meeting at the White House with President Barack Obama, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10476-haiti-politic-president-martelly-received-by-us-president-barack-obama.html President Michel Martelly was received Wednesday at Howard University (Washington) where he took the floor before Frederick Provoste Schmoke, the President of the University, members of the administration of the institution and faculty, as well as hundreds of students, intellectuals of the most prestigious African American university.

The Head of State, very cheered for his speech and his exchanges with students, emphasized the crucial role played by the University in the history of the United States. He also welcomed the commitment of the Centre for Advanced Studies, which takes into account the educational needs of the large black population in the world, particularly those of developing countries, such as Haiti.

While recalling the determinism of the university in of a prominent son of the United States and descendant of Haitian, sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, Pan-African activist, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, the President Martelly said he was convinced that education is an effective weapon against ignorance and servitude of peoples "education helps people to develop their potential, to understand and transform the world around them."

Furthermore he described the efforts of his Administration to educate young people and offer them a quality education. He believes that it is by developing their capacities, that Haiti will build its strength in the future, saying "We're starting to build a new class of young scholars and we are working on training, the regularization of the situation of teachers and Construction of suitable spaces for their development."

During his speech, the Head of State also expressed his interest in a partnership with the Board of Howard University, to create exchange programs between the best Haitian universities and specialized schools in education, law, medicine, engineering, architecture and computer science.

At the end of this conversation, students praised the efforts of the Head of State which made the education of youth of his country a President Martelly invited them to come and visit Haiti to stay and organize educational sessions.
