Haiti - Health : Towards a Public-Private Partnership with the Epilepsy Clinic of Port-au-Prince

Wednesday, as part of the World Epilepsy Day, the First Lady of the Republic, Sophia Martelly, accompanied by Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, Minister of Public Health and Population (MSPP), visited the epilepsy clinic of Port-au-Prince to witness her support to epileptics, their parents and their friends.

During this visit, Dr. Lionel Carmant, Founder of the Clinic and Dr. Alix Elie both Neurologists, explained that epilepsy, known in Haiti as the "Malkadi" is the manifestation of a acute and transient dysfunction, of brain electrical activity, which results in seizures.

Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, together with the First Lady, consider a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in order to find effective ways to deal with this curable disease. Which will also allow some donors already identified as technical partners of MSPP, to make their donations through an officially recognized "This visit is part of the will of the MSPP to have a formal agreement with the Centre in order to take charge of this disease," declared the Minister.

For her part, the First Lady invited everyone to provide assistance to people with epilepsy. "[...] We expect the Minister and me, a Public-Private Partnership to enable the Centre to fulfill its mission more effectively and gradually extend its benefits to all departments. We will also work on a campaign to enable people to better understand the disease and live better with those who are affected."
