Haiti - Politic : Minimum Wage, demonstration this May 1st...

Volmy Fils Desrameaux, the Director General of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MAST) has indicated that to ensure compliance with the provisions of Presidential Decree dated 16 April 2014, regarding the new minimum wage https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10972-haiti-economy-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-minimum-wage.html , 4 inspectors will be deployed in each of the Departmental Directorate of MAST and at least twenty in the West Department.

Furthermore, he believes that the Haitian labor code, which dates from 1961, must be reformed, the latter only concerns manufacturing activities. For him, the new Labour Code must take into account in addition to manufacturing activities, all other sectors, including the informal sector. He invited all workers to contribute to the modernization of the Labour Code, by sending their comments and suggestion to the MAST.

Note that this May 1, on the occasion of Labor Day, several trade unions plan to hold a peaceful march from the front of the premises of the National Society of Industrial Parks (SONAPI) on the road to the airport to end to the Champ de Mars with several stop, especially before the MAST to denounce the government's decision to set at 225 gourdes minimum wages in subcontracting industries. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11003-haiti-politic-minimum-wage-css-work-is-just-beginning.html

Camille Charlmers, the Executive Director of "Haitian Advocacy Platform for Alternative Development" (PAPDA), said support all the demonstrations to force the government to revise upwards the salaries, including those of workers in the sub-contracting who demand 500 gourdes per working day, a position shared by Senator Steven Benoit.

It is worth clarifying to avoid misinterpretation, that it is not the Executive that set alone the minimum wage. The decree issued by the Executive reflects the decision taken, after extensive consultation by 9 members of the Supreme Council of Wages (CSS) [3 union representatives, three representatives of the Government and 3 employers' representative] https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10972-haiti-economy-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-minimum-wage.html
