Haiti - Economy : The Craft, vector of socio-economic development

Before the celebration of Labor Day and Agriculture (from May 1 to 3), the National Handicrafts Office (ONART) organized from 28 to 30 April 2014 an exhibition of crafts in its premises in Baussan street.

Present at the exhibition, Charles Jean Jacques, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, situating the problem faced by the artisanal sector to standardized production (funding and training), stated that "This activity is to encourage because it puts the Haitian government face its responsibilities, face the challenge of modernization of the Craft, vector of socio-economic development [...] Everything we need in this sector is a legal support and the guarantee of the availability of these products for the international consumption."

While promising to work with the ONART around the project of a Craft Forum, in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, the Minister Jean believes that the Office should be the hub of everything that is done in the sector worldwide, noting that "The value, as well as the beauty of Haitian products are well established," arguing for the restructuring of the ONART to a time when the Centre for Professional training of Nazon, focuses on the Craft as a teaching discipline.

During his exchange with Artisans, Minister Charles Jean Jacques said come see the time when the craft sector is finally shown on the national plan "There must be a special plan for the craftsmen who need access to preferential loans needed to strengthen their activities."

Rony François, the Director of ONART did not hide his satisfaction to see the understanding of the Minister, face the problems that currently confront the Office and how the Minister intends to help find solutions.
