Immediately after the earthquake Dominican Red Cross has quickly transformed one of its clinics to "La Caleta", Dominican Republic, a medical center for Haitian refugees. There are about 10 years, the population of La Caleta were about 700 Haitians, but today the population exceeds 8,000 in very big rise since the seism of last January.

"The Haitians who fled to the Dominican Republic had nothing with them. It was impossible for them to remain in Haiti because everything they owned had been destroyed. The Medical Centre Lack of modern equipment that is normally found in a hospital. However it has some medical workers speaking Haitian Creole and French dedicated to Haitians who do not speak Spanish" said Lara responsible for the health center.

At the health center, Haitians can not only receive quality medical care, but also take courses to learn about general hygiene, enhance their knowledge about water and its dangers, prenatal care, the AIDS prevention and other topics. "Another challenge for the Haitian refugees is that many of them have lost their important official documents, birth certificate, identity card, passport, etc... without these legal documents they are unable to find a job and can not qualify for government assistance" said Wilnail Saint-Jean, a Haitian volunteer at the health center.
