Haiti - NOTICE : The vigilance for heavy rains of May remains active

Rains of May continue to cause substantial damage and flooding in several parts of the country, mainly in the departments of Artibonite, Central, West and Nippes. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11194-haiti-security-flooding-in-3-departments.html This situation is expected to persist at least until Friday, according to forecasts from the National Meteorological Center (CNM).

Accordingly, the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC), in conjunction with the CNM and the Permanent Secretariat of Risk Management, maintains the notice of flooding, landslides and rockslide throughout the national territory. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11208-haiti-news-some-news-here-and-there.html

Populations, especially those living in flood plains, near the banks of rivers and ravines, near the coast and on the mountainsides, must remain vigilant and listen to the radio to be aware of the evolution of weather situation.

The DPC is asking to teh populations :

  • Not to cross under any circumstances, rivers and ravines, flooded, or on foot, or on the back of beast, or car;

    To go to safer places, if they feel their home is threatened, or if the authorities ask them;

  • To show solidarity towards children, the disabled and elderly;

  • Placing animals in a safe place;

The DPC reminds the civil protection structures departmental, municipal and local, that they must remain mobilized and continue to support the population during this rainy season.

In addition, the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission (ECHO) stressed that the heavy rains have affected several areas across the country in the past days, provoking mainly small scale flooding "Up to now, the affected population has been supported by national capacities. However, as the contingency stocks of the Haitian Civil Protection are limited, international assistance might be requested if the rains continue at the same pace. Existing contingency stocks of the international community include inter alia non-food items, food, nutrition and cholera stocks."
