Haiti - Social : Nearly 3% of children in the country are «Restaveks»

At the recent launch of the quantitative and qualitative national study on the phenomenon of child domestic workers "restavèks" in Haiti, funded to the tune of 500,000 U.S. dollars https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11263-haiti-social-launch-of-nationwide-study-on-children-restaveks.html , Charles Jean-Jacques, Minister of Social Affairs, acknowledged that child domestics, centennial practice in our society, affecting approximately 3% of Haitian children "Some see it as a means of social support, others see it as a disguised form of ocial cooperation allowing to have a labor cheap. This practice, in many ways, is similar to an operating system," by pulling the alarm against this practice.

Minister Jean Jacques argues that all Haitian children should enjoy the right to evolve in a protective family environment, to have access to basic social services that may enable them to become citizens accomplished and productive members of society. "The critical situation of many child domestic workers constitutes a serious violation of their rights. It remains an obstacle to the realization of many national development objectives. Hence the necessity of fighting the social determinants effects that tend to perpetuate this state of vulnerability and social injustice within which evolve many of our children."

"The Administration Martelly and Lamothe Government in the promotion of the establishment of a more equitable society have increased access to education. Number of projects of social assistance for the most vulnerable were put in place to ensure equal opportunities for all son of the nation," indicated the Minister who is particularly sensitive to the seriousness of child labor. Through actions among which include the continuation of the reform of the Labour Code, the development of the framework law of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research (IBESR) aimed at strengthening the public services of child protection "The Ministry is committed to the fight against this scourge," assured Minister Jean Jacques.
