Haiti - Diplomacy : Canada welcomes the new Dominican law

Thursday in a joint note, Georges Boissé, Ambassador of Canada to the Dominican Republic and Gilles Rivard, acting Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Canada in Haiti, "welcome the signing by the Dominican President Danilo Medina", of a new law [enacted May 23], which provide a mechanism to regularize the situation of foreign illegal immigrants, most of whom are of Haitian origin, following the 168-13 decision of the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic.

"

Canada sees in this new law a step in the right direction, and a clear indication of the concern of the Dominican Republic in respect of Human Rights and its international obligations. Canada will follow with interest the implementation of regulations related to the law, which will also open together with the decree of regularization of illegal migrants adopted in November, access to naturalization of unregistered persons who were born in the Dominican Republic. Provisions promoting compliance of the process and active participation of civil society in the latter, are also a good initiative to ensure respect for the rights of those concerned.

Canada also believes it is important for the Dominican Republic and Haiti to spare no effort to continue their cooperation in bilateral issus."
