Haiti - Humanitarian : UNICEF has developed a nutrition strategy for the next three years

The United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF), has developed a nutrition strategy for 2014-2017 requesting a budget of nearly 14 million U.S. dollars. This document has been formulated on the basis of the analysis of the nutritional situation of Haiti and fall within the framework of the 2014-2017 strategic plan of the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population.

This strategy aims to promote proper nutrition in order to improve child survival and to allow maximum development of their physical and intellectual potential. It also aims to promote the health and well-being of women, while focusing on the following six areas: prevention of malnutrition, treatment of nutritional diseases, coordination, information management, training and research.

Recall that in Haiti, the prevalence of chronic and acute malnutrition has decreased significantly over the past 10 years, corroborated by SMART and EMMUS (2012) surveys respectively from 30% to 22% and from 10% to 5.1% (2006 to 2012).

These advances were made possible by funding received after the January 2010 earthquake and the effective involvement of the Haitian Government and its technical partners. However, with the slowdown in the funding and the departure of several key partners, the execution of this strategic plan could help to maintain at least, the achievements obtained to date for the well-being of Haitian children.
