Haiti - Diplomacy : Loss of a great friend of Haiti

The President of the Republic Michel Martelly, learned with great sorrow the death of the Argentinean Ambassador Rodolfo Mattarollo, which occurred Wednesday, June 18, 2014 in Buenos Aires.

"Great friend of Haiti, Representative of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in Haiti and uncompromising defender of human rights, this extraordinary humanist never missed an opportunity to promote and defend the inalienable rights of the human person and to work to the strengthening of relations between the Republic of Haiti, the Republic of Argentina and all of the countries forming the regional organization.

On my own behalf, on behalf of the Government and people of Haiti, I express my deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the diplomat and the Government and people of Argentina, as well as member countries of UNASUR."

Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister, in charge of Human Rights and the Fight Against Extreme Poverty expressed dismay by the death of Rodolfo Mattarollo, recalling that "Since his appointment as Deputy Executive Director of MICIVIH in 1996 to his appointment as Ambassador and Special Representative of the Technical Secretariat of UNASUR, he has spent eight years of his life to helping Haiti to lay the foundations of its nascent democracy.

Ambassador Mattarollo deeply loved Haiti. He was a caring mentor to each of our steps in building the rule of law that the Administration Martelly and Lamothe government promised to the Nation.

In terms of institutional strengthening, he was there to guide us. He waa wise adviser for the Office of the Minister Delegate for Human Rights and the fight against extreme poverty at the beginning of the implementation of mechanisms of human rights to build this exemplary democracy to which aspirates the whole people.

On 14 February this year, at the speech delivered to paid tribute to him to the farewell ceremony at the Embassy of Argentina, we wished him goodbye rather that farewell, convinced he would have to return among us to rejoice in our progress on the path to the rule of law and that he had helped to draw. He will no longer return, however, see the the tree of democracy grow, that his expertise and dedication had helped us to plant. The Haitian people themselves will be eternally grateful.

As a final message, I will talk of the necessary quest for consensus. If we can play a role to accompany Haiti in the quest for consensus in a large national agreement, I think this would be the solution to many conflicts and weaknesses in Haiti. Consensus not only between political parties, but also with all areas within the diaspora, NGOs, churches... The consensus found, it is a dream... but Haiti has always dreamed of, so let me finish with a dream !

The Office, therefore undertakes to make every effort to make this dream a reality and help build thisrule of law, for which he had so invested.

The Office of the Minister Delegate bows to the remains of this eminent professor and human rights activist while wishing condolences to his family and UNASUR."
