Haiti - Health : Maintaining health measures along the border

The Dominican Ministry of Health said today the continued supervision of the health control throughout the border area. Dr Bautista Rojas Gómez, Secretary of State for Public Health and Social Assistance (Secretaría de Estado de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social SESPA) in Dominican Republic, said that more than one million doses of vaccine were administered to the Haitian and Dominican Republic population living along the border or cross this one.

However, he insisted that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), nor any others international agency had notified an alert for the epidemic of rubella or any other disease in the territory of Haiti.

He explained that after the earthquake that struck Haiti on last January 12, the Dominican health officials have established a close health monitoring on the border to prevent the onset of disease (polio, whooping cough, rabies, diphtheria, tetanus, typhoid, pneumococcus, hepatitis B and measles), in order to prevent the health risks the public health. Affirming, by doing so, it conforms strictly to the procedures and recommendations of the International Code for Health.

Finally, he informed that these preventive measures are given to Haitians and Dominicans along the border in the health centers and immunization posts in the province of Montecristi, Dajabón, Independencia, Elías Piña, and Pedernales but also to Baoruco, Barahona, Santiago Rodríguez, Azua, Valverde, La Romana and La Altagracia.
