Haiti - Agriculture : Tripartite Agreement for the Watersheds

The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR) is pleased to partner with the World Food Programme (WFP) and NGOs Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action) to announce a partnership agreement to implement and develop watersheds and irrigated agricultural areas in the North West. The project will create 150 hectares of irrigated farmland divided into three zones within the perimeters of Nan Carré, Ti Rivière 1ère Passe and Vieille Place.

"Through the pooling of expertise, this project will have a significant impact on food availability in the region, reflecting the commitment of WFP in the country," said Ms. Myrta Kaulard, WFP Representative in Haiti.

"This project will protect and provide irrigation for local farmers to increase production, reducing food insecurity in this region", said Mr. Jonas Gué, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development.

WFP will devote itself to the refitting of the watersheds overhanging the 3 perimeters in order to better protect them from the effects of erosion. A total of 4.360 hectares of land at the watershed level will be upgraded and will supply the three systems of irrigation created downwards.

The redevelopment will be through a project "Food and money for work" undertaken by the German NGO (engaged for a long time in this area) which will work with the community to create a total 2.600 employment.

The portion of the project ensured by the Ministry for agriculture, the Natural resources and Rural development (MARNDR) is partly financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
