Haiti - Tourism : Haiti in the Catalogue of 3rd UK tour operator

G Adventures began selling Haiti. A tour departing in February 2015, is available on its website since this week.

Jeff Russill, G Adventures vice-president of product and innovation, the 3rd UK operator, explained that Haiti had been on the operator’s wishlist but moved to the top after the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) asked the company to make a report on the country’s tourism potential.

Russill visited the country earlier this year with his partner Planeterra Foundation "We thought, that’s an amazing trip’ [...] people should realise it isn’t a beach destination, even though you’ll go to the beach while you’re there. It’s Creole, Vodou, music and food, and it’s an island of artists. There’s also the real-time history; there’s colonial history and the first successful slave rebellion and the Citadelle, but juxtaposed with that, it’s a nation in flux [...] There’s a good range of three-star hotels and they know what they’re doing [...]"

Russill support the Ministry's plans to target the tourism product, but warns against embracing "voluntourism" which would label Haiti as "a charity case," adding "there are big problems in the country but some destinations come out of nowhere. Thailand and Peru have been where Haiti is now."
