Haiti - Environment : Solid waste management a priority in Île-à-vache

As part of the tourism development project on the Île-à-vache, the government intends to preserve the authentic and natural character of the island and direct the development on eco-tourism development. The management of solid waste has been identified as priority activities to be implemented in 2013-2016 among the rehabilitation/construction works of infrastructure and public buildings for the urban development of the island.

In this context, the company Wastek SA specializes in the integrated management of the environment and waste, presented this week at the premises of IBI / DAA Group, in Petion Ville, the project "Pilot Management / Valuation of solid waste in the Île-à-vache", in the precense of Ms Karine Condé,

Departmental Director South Ministry of Tourism and Creative Industries, Fresnel Dorcin, secretary of state for crop production and René Hubert, coordinator of the tourist project of the island.

The primary objective of this pilot project is to develop, propose and implement an integrated and participatory plan for solid waste management on the island. This project creator of direct jobs will be based in particular on education, awareness of the targeted communities but also on the development of waste recovery systems adapted to the local context and the integration of waste management as an economic activity, see an element of curiosity and tourist attraction of the island.
