Haiti - Elections : President Martelly is preparing for a marathon of meetings...

Tuesday, Lucien Jura, Spokesman of the Presidency announced that President Michel Martelly took note of the close of regular work of the 49th Legislature without voting on amendments to the electoral law by the Senate.

That he also took note of the intention expressed by the Chamber of Deputies, through its resolution [nonbinding] of September 4 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11992-haiti-elections-the-lower-house-passed-a-resolution-in-favor-of-article-12-of-el-rancho.html asking the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) to proceed without delay to the update of the electoral calendar for publication and make the necessary arrangements to hold elections for two-thirds (2/3) of the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and local authorities, at the latest, at the end of 2014 to meet the wishes of the Constitution and the electoral Act 2013 in force, mainly in its article 19-1, reinforced by the El Rancho agreement.

Furthermore, Lucien Jura indicated that following the clarification of the President of the Senate, on the refusal of six opposition senators, members of the G6 [Jean-Baptiste Bien-Aimé (Northeast), Jean-Charles Moïse (North), Francky Exius (South), Westner Polycarpe (North), John Joël Joseph (West) et Jean William Jeanty (Nippes)] to respond to the invitation of the President of the Republic at the National Palace on September 1 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11957-haiti-politiquedialogue-avec-l-opposition-present-1-absents-6.html , and in order to take into account the views expressed by either side; the Head of State has decided to receive and hear the 6 senators, to receive the parties to which they are attached [Fanmi lavalas, Fusion, Inite, Kontra pèp la, Ayisyen pou Ayiti et MOPOD], as they have recommended; to meet other senators; to expand the encounter with the other great body of the state and also to expand its consultations also with other political parties and all sectors of society in general.

The Spokesperson announced that the President will soon announce the schedule of meetings.
