Haiti - Technology : Towards the establishment of a Remote Sensing Space Centre

Monday, November 17, 2014, following an agreement signed in September 2012 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-7362-haiti-technology-remote-sensing-space-centre-in-haiti.html Monday, Jean-Vernet Henry, Rector of the State University of Haiti (UEH) and Michel Laurent, of the Institute of Research for Development (IRD), will sign, under the auspices of the Haitian government and Embassy of France in Haiti, a Franco-Haitian Convention on Environmental Monitoring Satellite Aided in Haiti (SEAS-Haiti). According to the agenda of the ceremony, the President Martelly will speak on this occasion.

Within the framework of this Convention, a Remote Sensing Space Centre Within the framework of this Convention, a Centre for Remote Sensing will be located in the Campus Henri Christophe of the UEH in Limonade with for functions and objectives :

  • The environment (by enabling to study deforestation, water cycle, the coastlines) ;

  • Health (by conducting epidemiological maps) ;

  • Management of natural risks (through the detection of vulnerable zones) ;

  • Spatial planning (carrying out a detailed mapping of Haiti).

In order to exploit these images at their better, a Training Center and Research on monitoring of the environment will be created. It will bring together research teams national, regional and international. Specific training programs will be offered to Haitian researchers, and regional research and of pilot applications will be implemented.

With the signing of this agreement, an important step will be taken in the evolution of scientific research in Haiti, especially in the UEH.
