Haiti - Elections : Max Mathurin calls stakeholders to find a favorable outcome

Wednesday, Max Mathurin, president of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) at its first press conference since returning there a little over a month due to illness, called on stakeholders to work harder to find a favorable outcome and convenient to all, to consensus, to unlock the electoral process, hoping and believing can a solution be found before the end of the year to avoid a vacuum on the second Monday of January 2015 at parliament. According to him, it is still possible to prevent this legislative gap, reiterating the commitment of the Provisional Electoral Council to conduct free, fair, democratic and inclusive.

At the conference, Max Mathurin also spoke: the institution's operation, installation of Departmental Electoral Offices (BED) and Communal Electoral Offices (BEC), the CEP reports with international partners, parliament, the Executive, of the budget, of institutional strengthening...

Stressing that the CEP is facing budgetary constraints, putting the institution in the inability to meet the needs of BED and BEC. He also indicate that the CEP will in the next election provide logistics and security of BED and BEC at the level of 3 departments.

CEP president reminded once again that there is always a lack of legal framework, the electoral law, necessary tool for the organization of elections, which has not yet been voted by the senators, preventing the organization of elections, which were scheduled for October of this year, recalling that once the legal framework defined, the council will need 4 to 5 months to organize elections.

Among the CEP project, he mentioned the reactivation of specialized committees to electoral operations, training of members of the BED and BEC and the launch of a discussion table on the electoral process with all relevant sectors, political parties, civil society, international partners...

Max Mathurin, did not rule out the possibility of his departure, and that of his team, of the institution if that can resolve the crisis and allow the realization of the elections. "We have all been chosen for this mission, if the people does not want us, we will accept our fate."
