Haiti - Energy : 191 million for a hydroelectric project

Celso Amorim, Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived in Haiti yesterday, handed to President René Préval, a study carried out and financed [2.5 million] by Brazil, [at the request of President Préval there 3 years] for the construction of a hydropower plant in the Plateau central, which could generate up to 32 megawatts. A project of 191 million dollars whose Brazil committed itself financing 40 million dollars

Recall that this project was presented and approved at the last IHRC meeting (August 17, 2010), at this time this project did not have any funds for its realization in these terms:

Title: Energy - Generate hydropower: Artibonite

Project Description: Building the hydroelectric dam "Artibonite C-4" near Mirebalais; Installing a power of 32 MW, which supply energy to ~ 213,000 households, reaching about 1 million Haitian citizens

Executing Agency: To be determined

Total budget: $191 million over 40 months

Funded: $2.5 million
Donor: Brazil [NDHL-cost of preliminary studies]

Celso Amorim, said, while presenting the study at a ceremony at the Presidential Palace, "we must now find the other part [of funding] to enable the realization of this project."

René Préval has confirmed that the project will be presented "as soon as possible" to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and asked the Brazilian Minister to convey his thanks to President Lula. Recognizing that "it is good to have roads, but the construction of electricity infrastructure is very important."
