Haiti - Humanitarian : European Mission Monday in Port-au-Prince

A mission of European Commission Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection (ECHO), led by Mr. Esko Kentrschynskyj will visit Haiti from Monday 4th to Thursday, October 8th in order to carry out a follow-up of the humanitarian aid provided by the European commission during last months. The mission will visit projects financed by ECHO in Port-au-Prince and in various places of the country. It will meet the persons in charge of NGOs, agencies of the United Nations and Mouvement of the Red Cross in charge of the assistance on the ground. It will meet also many recipients of the European assistance.

The European Union and Member States have provided emergency humanitarian assistance of 315 million euros to Haiti immediately after the quake, including 120 million euros have been distributed through ECHO.

The humanitarian crisis in Haiti, however, continues. The hurricane season, expected to be particularly active this year, only adds to the problems of the country. The European Commission is ready to mobilize an additional emergency assistance if necessary.

"Not only is it essential to continue to meet the most pressing needs of Haitians [...] but it is to strengthen the partnership between the European Union with the Haitian authorities, the UN and all its partners on the ground to support their efforts to the ongoing reconstruction in the country", said the head of the mission.
