Haiti - Reconstruction : Training of 220 masons in earthquake-resistant construction

Wednesday, as part of the activities of Earthquake Prevention Plan of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the National Institute for Professional Training (INFP) and the Swiss Cooperation launched to the Hostellerie du Roi Henri Christophe, at Cap-Haitien, the Phase II of the training in earthquake-resistant construction for 220 masons in the northern departments of the Northeast and Northwest, with funds from the Fund for Reconstruction of Haiti (FRH)

This training follows that of 24 foremen and is part of a global vision of the Haitian Government, to strengthen the capacity of construction professionals to reduce the risk of collapse of both public and private buildings in the event of earthquake in the great north of the country.

Marina Gourgue, Secretary of State for Vocational Training declared that with this training "the Haitian State made a step closer to its goal for safe and sustainable reconstruction in Haiti and this training, must makes understand the imperative of preparing for any possible disaster."

Since its official launch in March 2012, the project is working with the support of Civil Protection (DPC) to reduce the vulnerability of Northern departments face the earthquake threat by strengthening the resilience of infrastructure and populations.

To date, 24 foremen have been trained in earthquake-resistant construction and a total of 37 public and private sector engineers received training on the introduction to seismic assessment of buildings in Cap-Haitien, Port-de-Paix, Fort-Liberté, and Ouanaminthe.

Carlos Uribe, UNDP Representative, while commending the efforts of the INFP to train future major North builders, believes that with this training, "the UNDP is supporting Haiti to prepare better because there no doubt that the country risk of other major disasters."
