Haiti - Economy : Opening of the 2nd session of the EU budgetary support program

Monday, Wilson Laleau, Minister of Economy and Finance in the presence of Jean-Jacques Charles, the National Authorising Officer of the European Development Fund (BONFED - EDF) and Ambassador Javier Nino Perez, Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Haiti, opened the 2nd session of the political dialogue of budgetary support program SBC (State Building Contract) in Haiti, amounting to 112 million Euros.

On the agenda, the management of public finances. After a brief presentation of the economic and financial situation of Haiti, of the strategy of the reform of public finances, of the 2014-2016 Action Plan, of successes achieved, weaknesses and prospects; the Minister Laleau, stressed that despite the difficulties, the country's economic stability was maintained, also welcoming that the focus on modernization is now running.

Regarding the cooperation of the EU with Haiti, in the context of budgetary support to the reconstruction of the state, Jean-Jacques Charles, said that the granting of this financial package of 112 million to euros, was an important contribution recalling the importance of ""[...] be able to manage all these reforms that are essential for the country."

For his part Ambassador Javier Nino Perez, recalled that the SBC accounted for 40% of all funds disbursed since 2010 and stressed that "the implementation of ambitious reforms, begins with the political dialogue."

Discussions also focused on ways to increase the level of tax revenues, the improvement of the programming, the implementation and monitoring of public investment.

This meeting will continue Thursday, April 16, where participants will discuss on the State reform and the sectoral education policy.
