Haiti - News : Electoral Zapping...

1,440 candidates already pre-registered...

According to figures released by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), as of Monday, 1,440 candidates to the partial Legislative for the entire country, have pre-registered online. 185 candidates for the Senate and 1,255 for deputies. However, the CEP specifies that so far only 237 candidates made the deposit of their documents to the BED in their respective regions.

But where women are... ?

The CEP deplores the fact that only 8% of 1,440 pre-registered candidates are women. In an attempt to correct this situation, the Electoral Council, in conjunction with the Ministry for Women, held Monday at the Karibe Hotel, a day of reflection on women's participation in elections as well as several workshops in provinces to identify the best strategy adopt to encourage, sensitize and motivate women not only to vote but also to be a candidate and integrate the electoral machine in the next elections.

Through this strategy, the CEP intends to ensure compliance with the 30% quota for women's participation in the electoral machine as stipulated in particular Article 100.1 of the Electoral Decree "In accordance with this decree, with the exception of the post of President of the Republic, the list of candidates submitted to the provisional Electoral Council by political parties or political groups for each elective office, must contain at least 30% of women."

According Yolette Mengual, Council member, Women's Representative, the CEP is legally equipped to require that 30% of women, although no penalty is expressly listed in the Electoral Decree for political entities offenders... Furthermore one may wonder if at 48 hours of the close of registration, these efforts will have a significant effect on increasing women's participation in the upcoming elections. Women underrepresented paradoxically represent more than 50% of the electorate.

The Minustah strengthens security in 6 departments...

On Monday, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced that the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) has strengthened its presence in 6 of the 10 departments, to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process.
