Haiti - Economy : Increase of minimum wage in the textile sector

Friday, May 1, at ceremonies of Labour Day and agriculture, the President Michel Martelly, has announced an increase of 6.7% of minium wage in the textile sector with immediate effect, which now passes to 225 to 240 gourdes for an 8 hour day. Recall that the previous wage of 225 gourdes was announced on 1 May 2014 and confirmed by a presidential decree dated April 16, 2014 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10972-haiti-economy-everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-minimum-wage.html

An announcement that was far from meeting the demands of the textile workers came to demonstrate outside the official gallery. The workers and their representatives continue to demand a daily wage of 500 gourdes https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11053-haiti-politic-minimum-wage-demonstration-this-may-1st.html and payment of overtime.

Note that if the executive is involved in decisions on the minimum wage, it represents only 1/3 of the votes. Decisions are taken by majority vote within the Superior Council of Salaries (CSS), which is composed of 3 union representatives (Jean Bonald Golinsky Fatal, Jean Franck Noisimond, Louis Fignolé St Cyr), of 3 representatives of the Government (Marie France H. Mondésir, Renan Hédouville, Daniel Altiné) and of 3 representative of employers (Réginald Boulos, Jean Dany Pierre François, Norma Powel).
