Mirlande Manigat, Secretary General of the "National Gathering of Progressive Democrats" (RDNP), presidential candidate under the banner of the "People's Patriotic Movement Dessalinien" (MOPOD) whose she is a founding member, gives up to her candidacy. In a letter to the Nation, dated May 6, she explained what motivated her decision.

After the withdrawal of Mirlande Manigat and former Prime Minister Jacques Alexis Edouad (Parti Louvri Baryè), both presidential candidates under the banner of MOPOD, the platform officially chose Me Samuel Madistin as its candidate for the presidential election.

Jean André Victor, General Coordinator of MOPOD which confirmed these two candidacy abandonment did not comment on the reasons. The inauguration ceremony of Me Samuel Madistin is scheduled this Saturday at the Palais de l’Art (Delmas 33).

Letter of Mrs. Mirlande Manigat :

"WHAT I BELIEVE AGAIN

Dear Fellow Citizens,

The various statements, discussions, and news of recent days have allowed you to see what I had already said, a few weeks ago. The elections as they are programmed, announced, set in an impossible timetable, are predictive of fake vote who does not respect democratic principles.

To this congenital defect add the problems that have not ceased to accumulate concerning the uncertain funding, amalgams on the interpretation of the laws of nationality and discharge mechanisms, the legal concept of residence, etc... Again points that let anticipate that elections will not be credible, if they take place.

Therefore I am obliged with regret to inform you that with the approval of members of the National Executive Committee of the party, I am withdrawing my candidacy for the Presidency.

I thank the MOPOD and all those who have never bargained me their confidence and who were preparing to help me. I want to reassure them and to confirm for the entire Nation, that I remain in reserve of the Republic and always available to serve my country, in conditions that favor its interests.

Haiti will remain Nation and will Defeat !
