Haiti - Heritage : Identification of historic buildings in Port-au-Prince

Following the study conducted by the firm of J.B. Millet on four blocks from the historic center, ISPAN has started since last Sept. 16 a large-scale identification of heritage buildings and historic area declared a public utility by the Decree of 2 September 2010 in downtown Port-au-Prince. This area is bounded, according to the decree, at the south by the Rue St. Honore, the north by the Rue des Césars, to the east by the Rue Capois and west by the sea. It is subjected, since September 1st, 2010, under the supervision of the Public Ministry of Labor, in a demolition campaign of the destroyed buildings or severely damaged by the seism of January 12th, 2010. This campaignis also accompanied by the removal of rubble and enter within the framework of the preliminary phase of the rebuilding of the downtown area of the Capital.

The identification operation of historic buildings, led by ISPAN, aims to point out that old buildings should be temporarily saved from demolition during the campaign, pending a more in-depth expertise. This vast operation is conducted by teams of Haitian architects specializing in conservation of cultural property. The cards used for identification of these historic buildings are digitized on a software database and linked to a map of the historic center. A comprehensive study of these cultural values identified and recommendations on the conservation of the historic center will follow identification.

This important operation in the historic center of Port-au-Prince is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
