As part of the promotion of South-South cooperation, the United Nations Organization for Food (FAO) provided support to the Peruvian International Cooperation Agency (APCI) in the implementation of a mission in Haiti, composed of technicians from the Peruvian National agricultural Research Institute (INIA) and FAO experts to gather information on the needs in the agricultural sector to enhance food security of the Haitian population.

Recall that through the FAO, the Government of Haiti had expressed interest in technical cooperation with Peru to promote and improve in particular : quinoa cultivation, sweet potato, potato and carob trees, as well as the breeding and raising of guinea pigs, one of the most nutritious meat in the world. With his vast experience, Peru has comparative advantages to support this project through the South-South Cooperation initiative.

In this project, FAO acts as a facilitator, promoting the exchange of experiences in the field of agriculture, food and hunger eradication.

Note that before the start of this mission, the two governments agreed to begin negotiations to conclude a framework agreement on international technical cooperation aimed at developing a bilateral South-South cooperation program on issues of interest for Peru and Haiti.
