Haiti - Epidemic : Some reassuring words, contradictory figures

Facts:

6pm, Saturday, October 23, 2010, an assessment of the Minister of Health reported 194 deaths from cholera and 2.364 hospital admissions in the departments of Artibonite and Centre. The last official assessment, Sunday, October 24, 2010, reported 253 deaths and hospitalizations 3.115.

Change from Saturday and Sunday:

Growth of the hospitalizations 751 cases (31%)

Growth of deaths 59 (+30%)

This does not prevent Gabriel Thimothé, the Director General of the Haitian Ministry of Public Health to declare "The trend is that it stabilizes, without being able to say whether we have reached a peak [...] hospitalizations seem stagnate" [!].

Saturday, on the 194 deaths, 89 deaths were reported in the hospitals and 105 communities (+20%).

Without being alarmist, taking into account the number of people being presented to the hospitals (according to testimonies of doctors) since the beginning of the epidemic it is extremely probable that short-term (next assessment) the number of deaths ranges between 290 and 320 and the number of hospitalization should unfortunately exceed the 4.000. This by excluding that the epidemic touches the refugee camps.

Confirmed cases outside Artibonite:

In Cap Haitien a case of cholera has been confirmed and treated at University Hospital Justinian.

Five cases of cholera (imported from the Artibonite) in Port-au-Prince were quickly diagnosed and isolated.

The Department of Health and WHO investigation of suspected outside Artibonite

  • Leogane 2 cases

  • Southern Department possibly Les Cayes, test in progress by WHO

  • Pétion City, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) announced that there would be two cases in the camp

  • Department of Nippes

  • Béneche (centre)

  • Five suspected cases of cholera were reported in Archaie (Department of the Ouest).

A free mobile phone number "4636" was set up by all cell phone companies. The user must send the text message "Maladi" (without the quotes) at the onset of symptoms of cholera.
