Haiti - Economy : Strengthening of youth employment in the Haitian-Dominican border

Wednesday, as part of the 6th edition of the binational ecotourism and production fair (7 to 15 November 2015) organized by the Science and Art Foundation https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-15698-icihaiti-tourism-opening-of-the-6th-fair-binational-ecotourism.html , the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with the participation of the Dominican Ministry of Agriculture, has proceeded with the presentation of the bi-national component of the Regional Project "Strengthening Rural Employment Decent for Youth Caribbean".

This project funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and FAO will benefit young women and men in rural communities of the Dominican Province of Elias Piña and Belladère commune on the Haitian side of the border.

Capacity building, adoption of innovations and best practices for business development in this young population, are among the objectives of the project whose ultimate goal is to facilitate the joint process of development of programs and the formulation of public policy with both governments and civil society.

This initiative promote the positive experiences of collaboration between IFAD, FAO and the NGO "PROCASUR" to the Haitian-Dominican border in the implementation of an earlier project on "Exchange of experiences and mutual knowledge on food security and income generation practices in border areas between Haiti and the Dominican Republic", carried out between September 2012 and December 2013.

FAO believes that the agricultural sector can play an important role in the creation of decent employment opportunities for youth and contribute to the expansion of other related sectors.
