Haiti - Social : 207,000 «restaveks» of less than 15 years exploited in the country...

Friday, a study conducted by more than twenty national and international organizations led by the Ministry of Social Affairs (launched in 2014), revealed that one out of four children in Haiti, not living with their biological parents, and that 207,000 children under the age of 15, worked more than 14 hours a week in domestic work and other, in unacceptable conditions. 24% sometimes work even at night...

"This figure of 207,000 children is intolerable," said Ariel Henry, the Minister of Social Affairs, noting that the phenomenon of child domestic workers, the "restavek" was a complex problem in Haiti based on cultural habits of traditional solidarity and that change mentalities took time and could not settle with the decrees.

For Arielle Jeanty Villedrouin l the Director of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research (IBESR), makes condemn these abuses is the top priority of his institution stating "These children are exploited by Haitian citizens who feel to help [...] we all have to rebel because it is a loss not only for the child but for the whole society."

Recall that at the launch of the study, Jean-Jacques Charles, the Minister of Social Affairs then in office (2014) stated "it is inconceivable to XXI century, in a country that abolished slavery, to have children as slaves." https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-11263-haiti-social-launch-of-nationwide-study-on-children-restaveks.html
