Haiti - FLASH : The Senate asks the Head of State to suspend the electoral process

In a letter dated Wednesday, December 16, sent to President Michel Martelly, the Senate request to the Head of State to suspend the electoral process until a Commission shed light on the allegations of fraud and irregularities at the elections of 25 October.

Mr. President of the Republic,

The Senate of the Republic has the honor to inform you that, following a working meeting and in-depth analysis of the crisis resulting from the elections of August 9 and October 25, 2015, the Senators took the decisions that the circumstances require.

They also come, by this ask you to use the powers you have under section 136 [see note] of the Constitution to take action in order to suspend and order the CEP for the postponement of the proclamation of the results of municipal, parliamentary and presidential elections, and that the electoral process be suspended until a verification Commission or evaluation shed light on the numerous allegations of fraud, gross irregularities and notorious corruption surrounding the said process in which there are involved members and judges of the electoral institution.

The Senate also requests Your Excellency to kindly instruct the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to convey this position of the Senate to the International Community partners involved in the electoral process.

This patriotic approach of the Senate of the Republic, who decreed the permanence and remains seized of the matter falls within the framework of its constitutional and republican powers under Article 185 and is intended to safeguard the higher interests of the nation threatened by this election crisis whose magnitude seems to escape its leaders.

The Senate of the Republic ask you to accept, Mr. President, the assurance of its patriotic considerations.
