Haiti - FLASH : «Adulterated Clairin» at least 10 dead

Since Sunday we count the dead in the zone of the streets of Enterrement, Carbone and fort Ste-Claire, victims of poisoning from ingestion of an "adulterated alcohol". At the Hospital of the State University of Haiti, medical authorities speak of more than 10 deaths, while several victims showing symptoms of poisoning: vomiting, severe headache, stomach ache, loss of vision... are still hospitalized.

Florence Duperval Guillaume, the Minister of Health speaks of 7 confirmed dead by a team from the Ministry on site at the Carbon street. A temporary assessment that seems well below the reported testimonies, many people having been able consume this adulterated alcohol, while no alert was launched at the earliest reported cases of poisoning.

The Minister confirmed that an investigation was opened and samples of this "adulterated clairin" were taken for analysis to determine the nature of this fatal alcohol.

Informed of the situation, the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. George Dubuche urges the population to greater vigilance.
