Haiti - FLASH : Electoral timetable in 1 month 1/2

Monday, Léopold Berlanger, President of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) clearly suggest that the electoral timetable for the pcoming elections will be ready by the end of May "if we want to organize good elections, it is necessary to create the conditions to make it happen." Stressing that there is much work to do before, the electoral machine having a lot of problems requires many corrections (procedure code, code of ethics, training etc...) Recalling also that the Verification Commission has a period of 30 days to submit its report, from the moment its members will be confirmed by Decree (probably this week).

Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN who met the same day the members of the CEP to take stock of the situation, also declared in an interview "My wish, as regards to these elections is that all stakeholders, the Government, the future Provisional Electoral Council, political parties and civil society, working for the success of these elections. It is these elections that will provide the country with an elected president. It is these elections that will ensure that the country can survive the current impasse. And it is these elections that will be used to create a framework for continuous socio-economic development of the country.

The interim authorities have a clearly defined task in the 5 February Agreement. These tasks relate primarily to the organization of elections, the continuation of the electoral process initiated in 2015. It is important that the country can conclude this process with an elected president and a Government, in accordance with the provisions of the Haitian Constitution.

My message to the authorities who will implement this Agreement is to find a way to achieve consensus positions and demonstrate their commitment to acting in the interests of the Haitian people and in the best interests of Haiti as a nation."
