Haiti - Agriculture : FAO supports Haitian women in the agricultural sector

Gender is one of the priorities for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its fight against hunger and food and nutrition insecurity. Therefore, in its Project food security improvement in the North East department (Component of the Program Objective Millennium EU) in support to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), it attaches importance of the first order. FAO is convinced of the role of women in sustainable development and natural resource management for improved food security and nutrition in Haiti.

This initiative of FAO in support to the MARNDR has as main objective of "improving food security of Northeast department by creating viable and sustainable opportunities for family farming, by increases in quantity and quality of local products of local marketing system, and improving the nutritional and health conditions of women and children in particular."

Fully financed by the European Union to the tune of €4 million, this initiative falls within the framework of the Triennial Programme for Agricultural Renewal (PTRA) of the Ministry and goes immediately to the national priorities of Haiti, both in terms of Food and Nutrition Security (SAN), of fight against poverty and agricultural development, while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the year 2016.
