Haiti - Politic : Mission of Kenneth Merten in Haiti

Thursday the Special Coordinator for Haiti Kenneth Merten arrived in Haiti to strengthen the US government's support for the organization of credible and honest and to discuss the urgent need to have elected officials at all levels of the Haitian Government.

During his meeting with Léopold Berlanger, President of the CEP, Kenneth Merten accompanied by US Ambassador accredited Haït, Peter F. Mulrean confirmed the support of the United States to Haitian Elections, even if they do not fund it.

During this meeting Léopold Berlanger asked the two diplomats to avoid the positions polarizing, which give the perception that the US is against the Haitian elections stressing "We must work together to make things progress because Haiti and the United States have common interests."

Léopold Berlanger did not return at that meeting, on the claim of the US this week, for the reimbursement by Haiti of $1.9 million not spent for the 2015/2016 elections. Yet during this claim, Léopold Berlanger declared in the American press that the request was "going too far" and betrayed "the will to obstruct the electoral process..."

This Friday Kenneth Merten is expected to meet with political leaders in Parliament, however, no "official" meeting with President de facto Privert, is on the agenda of US diplomat.
