Haiti - Cholera : At least 14 communes in Red Alert

Earlier this week, Ms. Katilla Pierre, Head of alert and response department of the Directorate of Epidemiology, laboratory and research at the Ministry of Health revealed that from 1 to 20 August 2016, 1,719 new cases of cholera were reported on national territory including 1,370 hospitalizations.

Moreover she reported that at least 14 communes are now in red alert for having registered (July 31 to August 20, 2016) at least 10 cases of cholera and one death : Saint-Michel, Petite-rivière and Verrettes in the Artibonite, Belladères, Mirebalais, Lascahobas in the Centre; Anse-à-veau in the Nippes; Cap-Haitien and Plaisance in teh North, Mont Organisé in the North East and Port-au-Prince, Carrefour, Tabarre and Gressier, in the West department.

The capacity of the Ministry of Health in terms of fight against cholera being limited and dependent for 65% of international partners, she she insisted to stress that all initiatives that allow Haiti to have more means to better planning the war against cholera are welcome

Recall that from 20 October 2010 to 20 August 2016, the cholera epidemic in Haiti affected 790,469 persons (Source Ministry), 463.561 were hospitalized and 9.392 people died.
