Haiti - Elections : The Failure of the CEP meeting

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) invited last Friday, at the restaurant Villate in Pétion Ville the candidates and authorities responsible for the electoral machine to try to normalize the situation.

Of the 18 candidates invited, only 3 were physically present: Jude Célestin "INITE", Jean Hector Anacasis "Mouvement Démocratique de la Jeunesse Haïtienne (MODEJHA)" and Yvon Neptune "Ayisyen pou Ayiti ".

Charles Henri Baker "Regwoupman sitwayen pou espwa (Respè) " was represented by Maître Carlos Hercules, Jean Henry Céant "Renmen Ayiti" was represented by Maître Camille Leblanc, Michel Martelly "Repons peyizan " was represented by Maître Gervais Charles, Mirlande Manigat " Rassemblement des Démocrates Nationaux Progressistes (RDNP) " was represented by Ambassador Edwin Lalanne. All other candidates were absent.

Those who believed learn something from this meeting had to leave disappointed. Summary of highlights:

The group of 12 of Karibe, through their lawyers, have decounced the problems of the electoral machine and the shared responsibilities of the CEP, the Government and the international and are remained firm on their position (cancellation of elections).

Jude Célestin and Jean Hector Anacacis, called for sanctions against candidates who demonstrated in contravention of electoral law. Jude Célestin, visibly satisfied with the electoral process, said he was confident of win the election...

Ambassador Colin Grandderson, Head of Mission OAS/CARICOM was attentive but silent...

The CEP represented by Gaillot Dorsainvil, its president and Pierre Louis Opont, its Director General, spent their time to refute the charges against the CEP, declaring that he would withdraw if they proved they had failed in their mission... While stating that the CEP will make the necessary corrections for the second turn... and the provisional results of the first tuen, will be published as scheduled on December 7, and they will reflect the popular opinion...

Louis Opont nevertheless acknowledged the "many deficiencies" of the "electoral machine" and apologized to candidates and others involved [the voters ?]...
