Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : 93,222 cases and 2,120 deaths, the epidemic is gaining ground

Since the beginning of the epidemic (October 19, 2010), 93.222 people were infected with cholera and treated, 44.157 were hospitalized and 2.120 people died of the disease (Latest figures of 4 December published by the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) on December 6).

Nothing seems to stop the spread of the epidemic of cholera (excluding figures largely undervalued by the MSPP, some voluntarily (Port-au-Prince and metropolitan area). The epidemic spread throughout the territory. The South is seriously affected and the partial assessment, of the department of Grand Anse looks very heavy, with a mortality rate of 58.1%.

Period from November 30 to December 4, 2010 (5 days)

Assessment at the national level (all ages):

CASES SEEN : (Cholera patients)

Nov. 30 84,391 (1)

Dec. 4 93,222 +10.46% (1) (-3.85% on previous period)

Dec. 4 4,459 (1) +8.67% (1) ( -57.6% on previous period (2))

356 people were hospitalized during this period

1 person every 20 minutes

DEATH

Nov. 30 181 (1)

Dec. 4 186 (1)

5 died during this period

1 person every 24 hours 40

(1) These figures are cumulative from the first report published by the MSPP, October 31, 2010. Recall that the epidemic started in Haiti on October 19, 2010.

(2) Note that for the second consecutive time, the MSPP don't have recorded 3 days on 5 days : the deaths, and reported partially the cases seen and hospitalized for this area (December 1,2 and 3) which gives a false positive impression of the situation. Repeating this practice can not be attributed to chance. Why figures of Port-au-Prince and its metropolitan area, the region most densely populated country, are much undervalued ?

For memory, let us recall that in his last report to the General Assembly, Mr. Ban said that UN health teams, believes that the official figures of the Haitian government, "could be double that because of difficulties in reporting". What would give us an assessment close to 180.000 infected people and more than 4.000 deaths...
