Haiti - Security : On over 250,000 illegal weapons in Haiti, only 15% are legalized

The Prime Minister, Enex Jean Charles indicated that as part of an effort to control the large amount of illegal weapons in circulation in the country, 38,000 firearms acquired on the black market, had already been legalized by the high command of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), in accordance with the instructions of the Superior Council of the National Police, chaired by the Prime Minister.

Last Thursday, the Head of Government heard by the Senate Committee "Justice, Security and National Defence" had declared "To date, we have already legalized 38,000. We are well aware that there is, next to this process, a lot of illegal weapons in circulation. We have therefore strengthened the PNH capacity to ensure control of the situation. We decided to establish a monitoring system at the borders (land, air and sea) as well as all the weapons that enter into Haiti. In addition, we want to identify, on the basis of an intelligence system, holders of illegal weapons to ensure that the weapons are out of harm."

Note that if the head of government does not seem to be able to provide an estimate of the number of illegal weapons in Haitian territory, recall that on 21 January 2015 Godson Orélus, the Director General of the PNH at the time, had declared on the sidelines of destruction of obsolete weapons and ammunition at the Police Academy on the road of Frères that according to official estimates, more than 250,000 illegal firearms were in circulation in Haiti, including handguns and weapons of high caliber... https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12991-haiti-security-more-than-250-000-illegal-weapons-in-circulation-in-the-country.html A quantity that has probably increased since 1 year and a half.
