Haiti - Matthew : State holds a high-level emergency meeting

Saturday at the National Palace, took place a high-level emergency meeting between President de facto Jocelerme Privert, Prime Minister Enex Jean-Charles, Léopold Berlanger, President of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), Sandra Honoré, the Special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and civilian Head of Minustah, accompanied by several officials of the UN mission, Michel-Ange Gédéon, Director General of the National Police, a representative of the Central Bank (BRH) and representatives of Civil Protection. The ministers Camille Édouard Junior (Justice), Yves Romain Bastien (Economy), and Pierrot Délienne (Foreign Affairs), the Director General of the Ministry of Interior and Territorial Communities and Uder Antoine, the Executive Director of CEP, also took part in this important meeting.

Several issues were discussed including the arrangements by the authorities as part of the passage of Hurricane Matthew on the country in the coming days; the Security of elections and modalities of development and accompanying of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and of CEP during the election day on 9 October.

Regarding the security of the elections, Privert emphasized on this necessity before, during and after the voting in order to prevent any disruption or any obstacles to the success of this important election.

With respect to the upcoming arrival of Matthew Category 4 hurricane whose first effects begin to be felt on the south coast https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18787-haiti-flash-matthew-approaches-haiti-in-red-vigilance.html the Head of State urged people to be vigilant while giving instructions to the relevant government authorities, including the Ministry of Interior and the civil protection, to take all necessary steps.

Alongside this meeting, the de facto First Lady launched a message to the people "We urge the Haitian people to pay attention and follow the alert instructions and guidelines given by the National Meteorological Center as part of the imminence of the passage of Matthew on our country.

We want to remind that the cabotage operations are prohibited on all coastal area of the country especially in the departments of South of the Grand'Anse, Nippes and West. We also draw the attention of the population on the fact that Matthew has a strong capacity of ainfall which may cause flooding and high winds."
