Haiti - FLASH : The mayor of Gonaïves assaulted in Port-au-Prince

Tuesday to the street Dalencourt, at Bourdon, the mayor of Gonaïves Neil Latortue (young brother of Sen. Youri Latortue), was assaulted late morning by unidentified individuals traveling aboard a motorcycle they would have robbed him.

While Mayor Latortue escaped unscathed from the attack, in Gonaïves, a false rumor led to believe that the mayor was killed in an attack in the capital, which has caused great tension in the city.

Supporters and sympathizers of Mayor took to the streets, erected barricades of burning tires in particular in the city center and blocked the National Road #1, to denounce a murder that never took place, demanding the closure of schools, businesses and other companies...

Once the information confirmed that the mayor was safe, calm has returned to Gonaïves, while police according to numerous testimonies of residents, did not intervene to restore order, while the panic seized small merchants and citizens.
