Haiti - Social : More than 1,4 million people need emergency assistance

More than 2 million people have been affected by the passage (Tuesday, October 4) of Matthew Category 4 hurricane on the entire territory, which made according to the latest provisional official toll : 473 dead https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18902-haiti-social-the-number-of-victims-increases.html and extensive damage in the agricultural sector https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18900-haiti-agriculture-very-grim-picture-of-the-agricultural-sector.html

7 of 10 geographical departments and at least 90 communes of the country have been affected by the weather phenomenon, notably the South and Grand'Anse swept by winds of cat. 4 hurricane and flooding.

According to the Civil Protection Directorate 1.410.774 people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance : South (464.986), Grand-Anse (374.641), Nippes (174.688), South East (158.150), West (149.099), North West (54.661) and in Artibonite (34.550).

Among these people more than 120,000 families have their homes destroyed or damaged. The number of people temporarily located in shelters continues to rise in the two most affected departments and exceeds 160,000.

"The Matthew hurricane hit us strongly, but we will recover," said François Anick Joseph, Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities, recalling that the priority for the Government and its national and international partners, including Haitian civil society, is to meet the urgent needs for water, food and medicines for people in affected areas, which need to be cleaned quickly, then move to the rehabilitation phase.
