Haiti - Cholera : New UN approach

Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) presented to the Member States a new approach on cholera in Haiti, including two lines of work:

The first is to strengthen efforts to address and eliminate cholera, as well as to improve long-term access to clean water and sanitation.

The second line of work is to develop a proposal of material assistance to the most affected Haitians by cholera after the beginning of the epidemic in 2010.

Total funding deemed necessary for the two lines of work is estimated at more than $400 million over the next two years.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pointed out that he would detail this new approach to the General Assembly on November this year adding "In the meantime, I ask the new Member States the necessary financial support for these two ines of work to ensure success. We must fulfill our moral duty to the people of Haiti."
