Haiti - FLASH : An UNICEF truck with medical aid attacked and looted

UNICEF confirmed that a truck of the UN organization loaded with medical supplies (kits for midwives and medicine among others), which ran along the south coast to supply several health centers, was attacked last Friday at Torbeck (near the bridge) by individuals who surrounded the vehicle, threatened the driver and looted the truck.

In a statement, UNICEF strongly condemned the attack against one of its trucks, stating that "such incidents are likely to hamper our action which is crucial for the well-being of children and families," stressing "The delivery of these inputs is of paramount importance for the victims, because between 70 and 80% of health facilities, in areas affected by the hurricane have been either damaged or destroyed. Closer to 112,500 children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition," eiterating its desire to continue to work alongside the Haitian government to assist the affected population.

Recall that this incident is a continuation of several attacks on humanitarian convoys, provoking the anger of the victims while the timing of delivery of humanitarian aid is not enough to meet the growing needs of vulnerable populations in the south

Recall that recently a convoy of 7 semitrailers of the NGO Food For The Poor - Haiti, was attacked by unidentified individuals, while heading toward Jérémie, n the department of Grand'Anse.
