Haiti - Security : Brazil withdraws from Minustah

Brazil has begun withdrawing its military contingent from the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and is considering completing its withdrawal before 15 April. Note that Brazil in Haiti with its 979 peacekeepers is the largest contributor with 40% of the UN Mission. In addition, it is the Lieutenant-General of the Brazilian Army Ajax Porto Pinheiro who commands the military component of the Minustah.

Recall that Brazil's military participation was due to end initially in October 2016, but the mission was extended by six months, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2313, of Thursday, 13 October 2016. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18931-haiti-flash-mandate-of-the-minustah-unanimously-renewed.html

For its part the Minustah wishes to clarify "As of February 2017, Brazil has 850 troops with the Brazilian Battalion, plus 120 with the Brazilian Engineering Company, and several staff officers at force headquarters.

The Minustah wants to reiterate its appreciation of the Brazilian military contribution to the peacekeeping mission in Haiti. The Brazilian contingent has been crucial in supporting the consolidation of peace in Haiti since the inception of the mission." moreover, Minustah wishes to point out that "any decision to draw down troops is for the troop contributing country (TCC) to make. All questions should be addressed to the TCC."
