Haiti - ALERT : Frauds increase on the Digicel network

The Digicel phone operator informs its customers that it faces, from a few weeks, to a significant increase in cases of fraud known as "bypass or bypass traffic".

Here is a way to understanding how fraudsters operate: If you receive a call from abroad and a local number from any operator appears on your phone, you are a victim of "bypass traffic". One of the consequences of this maneuver, beyond the quality of communication that can be very bad, is that you will not receive your usual "cash-back" credited to your Digicel account after each call received from abroad.

Therefore, in order to protect you, we strongly encourage all our customers who have experienced this experience or anyone who could give us information that can help to combat this bad practice, to contact us through these emails : Customercarehaiti@digicelgroup.com or kliyanpam@digicelgroup.com A major reward will be offered, after verification, to anyone who will allow the competent authorities to dismantle these operations, to recall that we will treat the various cases received in the utmost discretion.

Learn more about the Bypass :

For example a call via a legitimate route would normally cost $0.8 with an initiation fee of $0.5 in country A and a termination fee of $0.3 in country B. In the case of a bypass through VoIP (Voice over IP) the initiation fee is $0.15 and the termination fee is $0.05. The mobile operator in country B loses $0.25 (0.3-0.05) in termination fees, which results in an 83% loss, so the state also loses income (tax). There are also bypass via GSM technology (GSM Gateway), Bypass can also be national, incoming or outgoing. Bypassing interconnect points via cheaper routes such as the Internet.
