Haiti - Economy : Less strong increase in inflation for January

During the month of January 2017, the level of the General Consumer Price Index (base 100 in August 2004) rose from 288.9 to 291.6, showing a monthly increase of + 0.9% and 14.1% year-on-year, down slightly compared to 14.3% in December 2016.

The monthly increase in inflation is mainly the result of the behavior of consumption functions : "Food, drinks and tobacco" (+ 0.8%), "Clothing and fabrics, footwear" (+ 1.4%), "Rent Housing, Energy and Water" (+ 0.8%), "Landscaping Equipment and Maintenance of Housing" ( + 1.3%), "Health" (+ 1.4%) and "Other goods and services" (+ 1.8%).

The positive change in the index "Food, drinks and tobacco" which represents over 50% of the household budget come among other of the rising of : millet (+ 4.4%), cornflakes (+ 1.1%), Chicken (2.7%), hot dog (+ 2.1%), eggs (+ 1.1%), edible oil (+ 1.2%), avocado (+ 1.4%), bananas 2.0%), eggplant (1.6%), cabbage (1.5%), carrot (1.8%), tomato (1.4%), yam (0.9%) , Potato (+ 1.9%), orange (+ 1.6%), cassava (+ 1.0%), potato %) and raw sugar (+ 1.1%).

The progession of the index "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" is particularly linked to fabric prices (+ 3.9%), clothing (+ 3.2%), shirts (+ 0.8%), men's t-shirts + 1.7%), dress (+ 1.1%), shoes and tennis (+ 1.1%) and sandals (+ 0.8%).

The upward trend observed in the "Accommodation, Equipment and Maintenance of Housing" index follows the increase in the price of living room furniture (+ 2.4%), dining room (+ 3.0%), of the bed (+ 3.9%), the mattress (+ 5.0%), the curtains (+ 5.4%), the tablecloth (+ 2.5%), the refrigerator (+ 3.3%), the disinfectant (+ 4.0%) , Wages of domestic personnel (+ 1.3%) and miscellaneous services (+ 3.2%).

The increase in the index "Health" is linked particularly to rise in prices: drugs (+ 1.1%), prescription glasses (+ 0.4%) and fees paid to doctors (+ 2.4%).

Finally, the increase in the "Other goods and services" index is mainly due to the increase in prices: shampoo (+ 0.8%), toilet powder (+ 8.5%), cream for (+ 1.3%), other hair care products (+ 1.7%), toilet paper (+ 1.5%) and watches (+ 4.6%).
