Haiti - Social : Wave of arrests of Haitian in Barahona

Dozens of Haitians were arrested on Monday in different parts of the province of Barahona and repatriated to Haiti by the immigration services and the army. The arrests of undocumented Haitians occurred on the market of Barahona, in the city and other localities in the province. They were transported by army truck to the border town of Jimani and handed over to the immigration authorities, for the return in their countries of origin.

General Rafael López Santana, chief of the 5th Infantry Brigade, based in Barahona, said that undocumented Haitians were well treated and they have offered no resistance when arrested, adding that repatriation of Haitian illegal was also a preventive measure against cholera [people illegal in the Dominican Republic usually avoid the health checks]. The General added that the surveillance at the border will remain strict on order of military institutions, health and immigration.

The officer said that surveillance in the border area has been doubled since Monday, mostly in border towns of Jimani and Pedernales. Adding that mobile monitoring stations were placed in the area Enriquillo and fixed checkpoints at the cross of Vicente Noble, Santa Elena, La Descubierta and elsewhere in the region.
