Haiti - Sports : Commitments of the new Minister Régine Lamur

Régine Lamur, the new Minister of Youth, Sports and Civic Action (MJSAC), installed in her duties on Wednesday by Carmel André Béliard, the new Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development, after having thanked President Jovenel Moïse and Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant for entrusting her with this portfolio, conscious of the heavy responsibilities announced several actions aimed at a real integration policy and enhancement of youth such as :

  • Promoting youth employment and empowerment ;

  • The coaching and technical and financial skills of young people to enable them to embark early on entrepreneurship ;

  • The development of Inter-youth network at regional, national and international level ;

  • The launch of the sectoral youth tables and a platform called "Espace-Jeune".

Moreover, she remains convinced that sport must be a vehicle for integration, citizenship, education and youth unity. She promised to take into account the components Sport and Education, Sport and Health, Sport and Social Cohesion, Sport and Local Authorities and committed to: :

  • Improve and increase sport infrastructure ;

  • Supervising athletes ;

  • Accompany sports federations and associations ;

  • Provide the sector with the means necessary for its full development by developing international co-operation in favor of sport under the label of Sports Diplomacy.

In addition, Régine Lamur says she wants to revive patriotism, love of the flag and motivate young people to cultivate national pride, respect and love for others by strengthening the teaching of civics in the school curriculum and favoring community actions in the neighborhoods and communal sections."

Minister Lamur calls on all sector players, managers and employees of the ministry to combine their efforts to ensure the development of sport, the development of youth and the promotion of civic values. It remains to be seen whether, beyond her commitments, she will obtain the financial means of its policy, whereas the MJSAC currently represents only 0.5% of the national budget.
