Haiti - Les Cayes : Case of the assassination of Berlin Aléandre

The assassination of the famous businessman Berlin Aléandre which occurred on December 31, 2010, has plunged the city of Les Cayes in the consternation. The departemental police arrested this week, an individual named Jean Katy Saint-Vil, suspected by the people, of being the alleged murderer of the businessman. According to Inspector Georges Lucima Gédéon, head of the office of Les Cayes, the suspect was stopped by the population of the town of Bergeaud, The police handed the suspect over to the prison authorities for the legal suite, of the investigation. Two other suspects were also arrested in connection with the investigation.

Since the post-election violence, anxiety prevails in Les Cayes, where there is a significant increasing of the acts of violence especially in the business sector. The police took several dispositions, whose the increasing of patrols to enhance security in the city where serious events were recorded during the demonstrations that followed the publication of preliminary results of the first round of elections.

The business sector of Les Cayes wishes to meet with local officials to discuss of the upsurge of the criminal acts, responsible for insecurity in the city. In protest, the business secteur has declared a 48-hour strike the January 6 and 7.
